Wellness Programs

Diabetes Grade 3 Project
This program was developed by the Northern Heart Health Coalition to address Type 2 Diabetes. It was initially funded by the Diabetes Strategy, and now is funded by the Northern Regional Wellness Coalition.
 
Profile: 
The target group - Grade 3 students and their parents attend 4 (50 minute) sessions delivered by Public Health/Community Health Nurses and/or Teacher PowerPoint Presentations and lesson plans on cd-rom.
 
Lessons:
 • What is Type 2 Diabetes? • Healthy Eating • Active Living • Parents and Children



Skipping for Active Living Program
In partnership with the Primary Health Care Project in the Grenfell Region, the Northern Regional Wellness Coalition sponsored the training of community members in the skill of rope skipping (2006). These volunteers then offer programs in their respective communities to children and youth.
 
Profile:
 • Experienced success – 80 children to date • Addresses the high rates of overweight and obesity in children in our region • Cost-effective; small allocation of resources • Alternative to expensive, organized sports



The Amazing Race
Designed to mimic the popular television show called the Amazing Race, members of the Mental Health Steering Committee designed a program for youth to encourage physical activity and mental health.
 
Profile:
 • Facilitated by the Mental Health Team • Combines elements of physical activity, mental health promotion and social health • Team of two individuals



The Stars of Mental Health
The Stars of Mental Health is a health promotion program targeting children. This program was designed by two Labrador-Grenfell Health professionals. The sessions are delivered to students in their classroom setting.  Age-appropriate scripts are utilized to encourage children to foster good mental health practices. The program offers a choice of health topics:
 
Profile:
 • Developed for children grades K-3 (Ages 4-8) • 1(50 minute) session • Delivered with the assistance of puppets, Freddy & Frieda • Includes scripts on: Self-Esteem • Problem-Solving • Positive Attitudes • Dealing with Anger • Bullying • Teasing & Respect • Sexual Abuse



The Toxic Tunnel
The Northern Wellness Coalition has invested in tobacco education in its region. The Toxic Tunnel project was developed and implemented with the partnerships of Labrador-Grenfell Health and the local school district. In an effort to provide health promotion education that is both interactive and creative, the Northern Regional Wellness Coalition purchased a tent and acquired visual aids and awareness learning tools to place inside. Children, youth and families are offered educational tours about the harmful effects of tobacco use.

Profile:
 • Requires the assistance of at least 4 individuals to set it up and provide tours to participants  • Addresses the following tobacco topics:  • Physiology and Anatomy of the Lung • What’s in a Cigarette • Second-hand smoke  • Smokeless Tobacco • Signs of...  • Cessation or Quitting Information
